SUPER Target Run

Today we went to the Minnesota State Fair - and we had a great time, despite the thick crowds of people and the COLD weather.  It didn't even hit 70 degrees today!
However, being in the Cities also allowed me to stop at a Super Target.  And a Super Target means variety!  Exactly what our teeny tiny Target does not have!
My little haul-o-goods is above:
  • Kellogg's Cinnabon bars: 2/$4 - 2/$1 Target coupon - 2/$.50 coupon = $0.50/box
  • Lucky Charms: $1 - $1 Target coupon = FREE
  • Kellogg's Pop Tarts: $1.52/box - $1 coupon - $0.75 Target coupon = FREE
  • Skittles Crazy Cores: $0.52/each - $1 Target coupon = $0.02/each
  • Covergirl Eyeliner: $2.89 - $1 Target coupon - $1 coupon = $0.89
My total OOP was:  $1.93

When the cashier rang up my items, she had a bit of trouble getting things to scan, and my total OOP was around $4.  This was still really great, but it was much higher than I expected.

As I re-ran the numbers in my head, I realized something was askew.  So, I went over the receipt, and sure enough.  For the coupons that would not scan, she actually charged me for the face value.  So, back inside I went and they quickly saw the error and refunded my money.

While I'm still very pleased with this run, the screw up kinda "stole my thunder" on my first "cheap sweep".

All well!  With this couponing becoming a habit, I have many more cheap sweeps in front of me!

Stash:
  • More snacks! :)
  • The Skittles might be a give away to some kids at church...we'll see if I can think of something extra special and fun with them.

Cash Wise Run

Tonight I quickly...er..uh...ya....  made a run to Cash Wise while Joe and Henry chilled in the car and watched Cars.  Well, it took a bit longer than I anticipated (like 20 minutes longer!), but I snagged some great deals.
  • Kellogg's Special K - Blueberry, 2/$4.88 + 2/$1 coupons = $1.44 per box
  • Smuckers Grape Jelly - special store coupon, $0.98
  • Old Orchard Apple Juice - special store coupon, $0.98
  • Gold N Plump Chicken Breast Tenders or Strips, Managers Special - $2.98 each + 1/$1 coupon = I only had one coupon, so 1 was $1.98.
  • Hormel Little Sizzlers (the spicy hot ones that we lurrrrrrv...I only bought 1 package because they are so unhealthy!) - $1.00
  • Eggo Waffles - 2/$3.34 + $1.00/2 coupon = $1.17 a box
  • Westpac Frozen Veggies - $0.88
  • Lynden Farms French Fries - $0.88
  • Tropicana - $2.50 + $1/1 coupon = $1.50
  • Yoplait yogurt cups - 4/FREE (with $25 purchase) + $0.50/6 = $0.12 each
  • David's Bagels - $0.98
  • Kotex 64ct Pantyliners - $2.50 + $1/1 coupon = $1.50
Stuff without a coupon:
  • Food Club Frozen Strawberries (only slightly cheaper than fresh, but just easier to deal with, and I eat them every day with my yogurt) - $2.50
  • Village Hearth Wheat Buns - $2.00
  • Quart of Skim milk - $1.69
  • Gallon of Whole milk - $3.36
  • Organic peach yogurt (it's for Henry, I'm picky with his yogurt) - $0.90
We spent a total of $46.95.  Saved $10.42 off the bill, or 18%.  Not too shabby being that the most expensive item on the list was a gallon of milk!!

I am thrilled with this haul.  UNDER $50 and that includes 4 packs of chicken!!  Many, many meals!

So, out of my $75 allowable grocery budget, I have $28.05 left.

Stash:
  • 6 packs of chicken (2 were from previous runs)
  • 7 bags of bagels
  • 10+ bags of veggies (6 were from this run)
  • 2 boxes of unopened cereal
  • 2 jars of jelly (1 was from a previous run)
  • Waffles are coming out of our ears because they have been on sale every week, plus I've had coupons.
  • 3 packs of Kotex (2 were from a previous Target run where I got them for free!)
The freezer is FULL.  I so wish we had a deep freeze!  I wanted to run over to Econo tomorrow to take advantage of the $2 Lean Cuisines, but I truly don't see how many will fit....perhaps I can do some more rearranging...

Payday Friday

Joe and I work for the same company; therefore, we get paid on the same day - every other Friday.

Our new (and improved!) checklist for each payday, the new items are in bold.  Hopefully they will help us learn to live leaner:
  1. Put all bonus monies into savings immediately.
  2. Put half of my paycheck into savings immediately.
  3. Pay off Visa
  4. Pay all bills due in the next 2 weeks
  5. Run budget numbers
  6. Determine cash budget - we run on a cash budget for Grocery, Eating Out, Personal (toiletries), Gift, Gas, Clothing, and Entertainment
Today, $173 went into savings.  We haven't done half my paycheck yet because we have flights to purchase for our December vacation.  So........that item might start next pay period!

The $75 a Week Grocery Challenge

Mary from Owlhaven.net is running something she calls, the $75 a Week Grocery Challenge.

She encourages you to basically take your current grocery budget and slenderize it.  Be extra thrifty this month.  Don't buy things you don't truly need.  Don't impulse buy.  That sorta thing.

This is perfect timing for me with this new set goal of cutting our budget.  I like a challenge to fire me up!  Mary says she includes shampoo and the like in this $75/week; however, my goal is "grocery store items" only-which sometimes includes toiletries and baby items, but most often does not.

We usually measure our budget by pay period, so $150/pay period, or $300 for the entire month of September.  Our normal budget is $410, so a baby step, but a good start!  And since we get paid today, I will start it today and run it through September 25th (and hopefully in October, I will cut it down more).

When I post about our grocery haul, I will note the total spent so we can easily determine how well I do!

Vacation Savings

I have seen it advertised around that restaurant.com is offering a great deal of 80% off their gift certificates with the code TASTE.  And I've thought about taking advantage, but just haven't.

Today, I got an email from MyPoints advertising the same thing.  I had compeltely forgotten I could not only snag a great deal of a $25 gift card only costing me $2, but I could earn points in my account as well!  I love MyPoints!  I've been a member for years and just redeemed again for a gift card to the Rainforest Cafe for Henry's birthday party.

Anyway, then the pot only got sweeter.

My Mother-in-Law came to visit this morning quickly to drop off some money for her plane ticket for our upcoming vacation to Disney World and New Orleans.  While in New Orleans we will be dining out on the town...what better time to take advantage of such a deal?!  PERFECT!

So, I did some SwagBucks searching, finding reviews of the various resturants that restaurants.com offered (earned a few SwagBucks doing the work too!) - and snagged myself 3 $25 giftcards for a total of $6.  Each of the restaurants require a minimum payment, but I figured with 5 adults, we'll hit that minimum without a problem.

So, not only did I earn points with MyPoints, and bucks with SwagBucks, but I also saved my family a wad of cold hard cash!  (If you are interested in learning more about the MyPoints or SwagBucks programs, just let me know-I can explain them in more detail...and if you sign up under me, I'll get some referral bonuses!)

Free music!

I just snagged some free music for my little guy off Amazon.com for free!  Super easy!  Amazon.com has just about any MP3 you are looking for.

Details found on --> Money Saving Mom's post  Thank you!

And speaking of free music, here is a great site with oodles of free kids MP3s --> Free Kids Music

Dishwasher Detergent

This stuff can add up quickly.  Here is a tip I found online for homemade detergent:

Mix 1 tablespoon borax with 1 tablespoon baking soda. Add it to your dishwasher and you are ready to go.

Seems pretty simple.  When we run out of our current stuff, maybe I will try this...

75 cents off Marie Callender's Pasta Al Dente

75 cents off new Marie Callender's Pasta Al Dente coupon...you might have to join Simple & Delicious to access this (and other) coupons.  Simple & Delicious is a program run by ConAgra foods, has recipes, coupons and meal ideas on it.  Pair this coupon with a good sale and you've got a cheap, easy lunch! --> http://www.simpleanddelicious.com/special-offers/printCoupon.do?CID=OVY6OQG6MY6VM&MID=

Cash Wise Foods Deals

Hailing from the land of no double coupons, here are a few deals I found when briefly looking at the flyer for this week:

1) When you buy $25 worth of groceries, get 4 FREE Yoplait yogurt cups. Combine this with the 50 cents off 6 coupon found on COUPONS.COM and you've got 6 cups for about a buck, or less than 20 cents a piece! Or just stick to the 4 free if you aren't a big yogurt eater.

2) Lynden Farms (32 oz) Fries/Hashbrowns and Westpac 16 oz veggies on sale for 88 cents. I don't believe any recent coupons are out to make this any cheaper.

3) Sweet Corn 12 ears for $2.98. There are ways of freezing corn - Google to the rescue!

4) David's Bagels, 98 cents. These are normally right around $1.41.

5) Ragu Pasta Sauce, $1.28. I usually make my own sauce which only costs slightly less than this.

6) Kellogg's Eggo Waffles, 3/$5. Combine with $1/2 coupon from 8/2 RedPlum. You are paying about $1.67 a box.

7) Sunbelt Granola Bars, 3/$5. Normally $2.19 a box. This one bugs me. There have been a huge abundancy of printable Sunbelt coupons in recent months, yet now they are gone. And the one I had left, 55 cents off, expired two days ago.

8) Pop Secret, 2/$5. Combine 8/16 SmartSource, 50 cents off 2. $2.25 a box-not a great bargain, but still a deal if you are a pop corn eater.

9) Much of the Food Club brand cans are on sale. Easy to stock up on basics here. I like the 2/88 cents Tomato Soup, and the 4/$3 Cream soups for crock-pot cooking.

10) Gold n' Plump Best O Fryer, BOGO with In Store coupon. Free poultry is always a good deal! Too bad I skeeve out at bone in.

11) Kotex Pads, 2/$5. Pantyliners or Pads work here, so take the two 8/23 Smart Source coupons, $1/1 Pads, 75 cents/Pantiliners and you are paying $1.63 per box. OR, if you just need one or the other, skip the second box and just take the one deal! Pantiliners would run you at $1.75 and Pads would run you at $1.50.

12) I also noticed the Organic Fruit Leather's are 2/88 cents. That seems like a pretty good bargain for a snack that fits in your purse and is healthy (and your child won't realize it's healthy!)

Free Crazy Ed's Roadkill Beef Jerky

I really hope it's beef and not raccoon. --> http://www.crazyedsroadkill.com/Sample

A money saving surprise!

Last night as Joe and I were driving home from work we had this conversation:

JOE: "Oh, hey...on Sunday, the Star Trib (our newspaper) will show up on our doorstep."

BROOK: "What?!  OOOOOOH!  THANK YOU HONEY!"

and if I weren't driving, I would have given him a big smooch.  Instead I grabbed his hand and gave him a squeeze.  You've never seen someone so excited about getting a newspaper subscription.  It's all about the coupons folks.

BROOK: "Did you get it for 99 cents an issue?"

He nods with a smile.

BROOK: "You just saved us 75 cents a week!"

and he saved me from having to remember to grab a paper each week at the grocery store, YAY!

Major Aquafresh deals

Whoa!

Check out this link --> http://www.aquafresh.com/Savings.aspx for a healthly list of Aquafresh coupons. Including a free sample of Aquafresh Extreme Clean (up to $1.25-can be used on travel size).

Despite my toothpaste brand specific husband, and our 6 tube stash - I'm so going for that free one!

Target Run

Last night we spent an hour at Target and ended up spending $77.33. More than I would have liked; however, we also saved 23.87. My orginial total would have been over $100, so I saved about 23% off our bill. A pretty good deal for this newbie couponer.

Plus, ALL the items are things we either needed and/or will need and use.

Here is the haul:
  • Johnson & Johnson Head to Toe Baby Wash. Should have waited until it was on sale since we weren't out, but I still snagged a deal with stacking coupons.
  • Dawn dish detergent, price mark down and a coupon. We are about out at home-so had to get this.
  • Reese's 8 pack of single cups. On sale + coupon. Drool. Okay, we didn't NEED these, but Joe reallyyyy likes them. As does Henry. And me!
  • Skittles Crazy Cores. Again, didn't need-but with my coupon they were FREE. And to see my little boy's face light up with excitement at the site of sugar is worth millions. :)
  • 2 boxes of Fiber One bars. On sale + coupon. We eat these. A lot.
  • 2 cans of Campbell's Healthy Request soup. On sale + coupon. Good lunch for Henry!
  • 3 cans of Chef Boy Ardee Ravoli. On clearance + coupon.
  • 2 big bags of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. On "clearance" (only like $1.50 off). We meant to only buy 1 bag, but Joe grabbed one and I didn't realize until we were home. It's okay though-it WILL get used in this house! Wish I woulda had a coupon though.
  • 3 Lean Cuisine meals. On Sale for $2 each. I eat these every day at work. $2 is a good sale. I just wish I had a coupon too!
  • International Delight. On clearance for $1.15 + a $1 off coupon. WOOT!
  • 2 Old Spice Deodorant. Joe is brand specific with things. This is one of them. And it's a valid one. You want your deodorant to work! Not on sale, but I had a coupon at least.
  • 1 Two pack-end cap special Secret deodrant. $4 for two, plus a coupon.
  • 4 tubes of Colgate Total. On clearance, 2 tubes for $5.10 and I had a $1 off coupon. So 4 tubes for $8.60, or $2.15 a tube. Another brand Joe likes. This one I'm a bit "whatever" on-but he likes it...so I could have gotten a better deal, but I brought a wonderful smile to my hubbys face when he saw the haul. And we don't have CVS or Walgreens, so free toothpaste is almost unheard of.
  • 2 tubes of Colagate Max Fresh. On clearance for $2.92 each, plus I had 2 $1 off coupons. This is for me. Obviously. ;)
  • 1 Bounty Basic roll + 1 Charmin travel size. $1.50 off Target coupon + Bounty coupon = one stinkin' good deal.
  • $5 Gift card promotion. These items were slighthly marked down, plus if you buy 5 you get a $5 gift card:
    • 1 box of Quaker oatmeal. Joe eats this several days a week.
    • 1 box of Quaker Oatmeal bars. We eat these often.
    • 1 big bag of Cheddar Quaker Quakes. These taste like Cheetos but are rice cakes! Me LOVE.
    • 2 boxes of True Delights bars, I had 2 $1 off coupons for these. I had planned on 5 boxes of these paired with coupons to make it a better deal, BUT, our store only had 2 flavors and one did not appeal to us, AND, we reallyyyyy use the other items on a very regular basis.
I might try to hit up this deal again if I can find coupons on the oatmeal, bars, or chips!

So for every single item it was either on sale, on clearance and/or I had a coupon.

Stash:
  • 6 tubes of toothpaste.
  • 4 sticks of my deodorant (2 from last week's 34 cent Dove deal
  • We have a BOATLOAD of snacks. I am going to try and stretch these until October. (Unless I can get something for free or nearly free...!)
